It All Starts In The Gut

Take Care Of Your Gut

We, health professionals within the complementary and alternative medicine profession, place a huge emphasis on the health of the digestive tract because it effects maintaining general health and well-being.

It is logical if you believe that the digestive system is where we start taking in nutrients from the foods we eat, which serve to nourish our bodies and fuel its many processes. It is also where we eliminate waste and, more importantly, toxins.  The health of our liver, lymphatic system and immune system are all greatly affected by the condition of our intestines.

Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue

Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT) is found in the intestines and comprises lymphocytes, macrophages, Peyer’s patches and lymph nodes.

It is relevant to a healthy body because it is the largest collection of immune cells, about 70% of all antibody-producing cells in the body are in the GALT, so this makes your gut the most important part of your immune system.

The GALT works constantly to prevent unwanted micro-organisms (such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast and parasites) from entering our bodies.

Sadly, many suffer from poor digestion. There are several unpleasant, yet common, digestive disorders (such as leaky gut syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and dysbiosis) and inflammatory bowel diseases (such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), which do cause pain and distress.

In many cases, dietary improvements, and avoiding certain irritant and/or inflammatory foods, could help alleviate the symptoms of digestive issues - if not eliminate them altogether.  Similarly, many people choose to support their balanced digestive health diet with health supplements*.  For example, multi-strain probiotics, high-quality dietary fiber, natural colon cleansers, digestive enzymes etc.

FYI:

  • Cooking destroys enzymes naturally present in food to assist in their digestion.
  • Your digestion begins in the mouth.
  • Your saliva contains enzymes that begin carbohydrate digestion. It is also antibacterial.
  • Your immune system is the most important part of your gut.
  • Self-poisoning takes place when waste remains in the colon (constipation) toxins are reabsorbed into the bloodstream.
  • Digestive enzymes are needed to properly digest food.
  • You have a limited reserve of digestive enzymes, decreasing as we age.

* Before taking supplements or changing your diet, we ask that you consult a physician or qualified health practitioner – especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication.
